David Jack was in charge of Boro during the 1950-51 season, at that point his sixth season in charge at the club. Middlesbrough finished the season off in a very impressive sixth place, Wilf Mannion and George Hardwick were in great form, Mannion was outstanding in front of goal. Boro also reached the third round of the FA Cup. The following two campaigns saw Boro fair much worse in the division, finishing 18th and 13th respectively. Boro stumbled out of the FA Cup in the forth round during the 51-52 season as they lost 4-1 against Doncaster Rovers. The 1953-54 campaign proved to be a debacle as Boro crashed down in the league, finishing the season off in 21st position, in turn condemning the outfit to a birth in the second division Walter Rowley left the managerial post at the end of the season for Bob Dennison to take charge at the club. Boro endured on several miserable campaigns as they were poor in the division and found themselves stuck in the second tier of English football. They came close during the 1956-57 and 1957-58, finishing the campaign off in sixth and seventh place respectively. They could not manage to surpass the forth round of the FA Cup, they reached that stage once again in 957 and 1958, losing against Stoke City and Birmingham City respectively.
